The excursion begins with the search for the passengers in El Calafate. In our comfortable buses, on the way to Los Glaciares National Park, the tour guides will provide you with information about the place, the glacier and the excursion.
Once in the port “Bajo de las Sombras” (Route 11, 70 km from El Calafate) you embark to cross Lake Rico, arriving at the opposite coast after approximately 20 minutes of navigation in front of the imposing south face of the Glacier. Perito Moreno.
Upon disembarking you will be greeted by our expert mountain guides, who will take you to a cozy shelter with a privileged view of the glacier. From here, the trekking begins! We will begin the tour with a walk along the coast of the lake and with our eyes focused on the glacier so as not to miss the opportunity to see landslides. Then, the guides will give a talk about glaciology.
Upon reaching the edge of the glacier, with the surprising blue hues of the ice framing the landscape, subgroups of a maximum of 20 people each will be organized and they will be fitted with the crampons and helmets provided by the company. This excursion is highly personalized (one guide for every 10 passengers maximum). Once on the glacier, you will receive a safety briefing and walk to enjoy this frozen paradise declared a World Heritage Site (1981).
The circuit on the glacier is of medium difficulty, the ice surface is irregular but firm and safe. During the walk you will be able to see a variety of typical glacier formations such as deep crevasses, blue sinkholes, huge seracs and turquoise lagoons.
At the end of the ice walk, you will visit the periglacial zone and the lateral moraine from where you will get a panoramic view of the Perito Moreno Glacier, the mountains and the lake. Then, we will return along a path that crosses the lush Patagonian Andean forest, thus completing the three-hour walk along the lake coast, moraine, ice and forest (of which approximately one hour is on the glacial ice). When you arrive at the shelter we will invite you with a hot drink and give you a souvenir. Shortly afterward they will board to return to Puerto Bajo de las Sombras, but first they will contemplate the enormous walls of the glacier from the boat.
The duration of the excursion with the transfer is around ten hours in total and includes a visit of approximately one hour to the walkways of the Perito Moreno Glacier, 7 km from the port. There you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of the glacier and explore one of the self-guided trails. If you do not opt for our transportation and go by your own means, the Minitrekking lasts approximately four and a half hours, leaving from the Port and returning to the same starting point.
Minitrekking is carried out in a natural environment, so the climatic conditions and characteristics of the glacier and its surroundings change daily. However, the excursion is not suspended as long as safety conditions allow it.
